Many agree that France is a great place for a break. Close to home but with an abundance of natural splendours, a rich heritage and a relaxed way of life (or ‘’art de vivre’), it ticks many boxes on the holiday checklist. From the unspoilt countryside and medieval heritage of Brittany and Normandy to the broad expanse of Atlantic beaches and coastal resorts; from elegant chateaux to bustling bistros, it’s crammed with magical contrasts. And there’s no better way to discover it all than on a self-drive holiday.
Pack your car and go
Forget no-frills-no-fun flying – it’s easier by sea. Take your own car, packed with everything you need and be free to explore at your own pace. Simply drive aboard and you’ll quickly discover your holiday has already started. Choose from cruise-ferry, économie, or high-speed sailings and you can get into the holiday mood as you head across the Channel.
With sailings from Plymouth, Portsmouth and Poole to ports in Normandy and Brittany, you’ll save miles of driving, fuel, tolls and overnight stops. On arrival, you’ll find well sign-posted roads, quieter than those at home, that turn motoring into a pleasure again.
Make 2014 the year you visit
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings and Battle of Normandy. Prepare to be moved by the wealth of museums and memorials, as well as special events planned for later this year; all very close to the ports of Caen and Cherbourg. For most it will best to avoid the state ceremonies around June 6th, and to visit earlier or later in the year to make the most of your trip.
The historical links continue at Bayeux, with its world-famous tapestry depicting 1066 and all that. An easy drive south is Le Mans – famous for motorsport but a delightful place itself, with its medieval old town fringed with lofty Roman walls. And a little further along the Sarthe Valley you’ll the vineyards and chateaux of the Loire, at Angers, Saumur and Chinon. Make time to sample wine direct from the vineyards and leave room in the boot for a few bottles…
In Brittany, the list of provincial cities worth a visit could include Rennes, Quimper, Dinan, Vitre, Fougeres or Vannes. Plus, of course, a seemingly endless rugged coastline dotted with seaside resorts and fishing ports: Dinard, Val Andre, Tregastel, Douarnenez, Benodet, Carnac, the list goes on and on…
So whatever kind of break you are thinking about this spring, there’s really only one destination to consider: France, a country where you can unwind and indulge your passions somewhere different for a few days.
